چکیده

Background Membrane proteins such as cell adhesion molecules, receptors, transporters and ion channel proteins all have essential roles in cell-growth, migration, and flow of information, cell-cell and cell-protein communication. Membrane proteins are targets of biopharmaceutical companies because they have diverse effects on the progression of many diseases [1]. Ion channels are membrane proteins that play critical roles in a number of cell functions including communication and neuromuscular activity. Treatment of channelopathy diseases such as cancer, cardiac arrhythmia, ataxia, paralysis, epilepsy, memory and learning loss, requires a broad understanding of ion channel function. Sialic acid is a critical charged glycan that affects the action potential of potassium channels which leads to changes in the neuronal system of organisms. In order to understand the effect of the sialylation on channel function, the presence of the sialic acid on the protein of interest should be studied. In this study, a novel method for the quantification of sialic acid is described for a potassium channel membrane protein.

Erythrocyte disaggregation shear stress, sialic acid, and cell aging in humans.

Erythrocyte aggregation, which plays an important role in the physiological behavior of blood fluidity, was found to be enhanced in hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. While the role of macromolecule bridging force has been widely described, cellular factors related to membrane sialic acid content, which might contribute to the negative charge of cell surface causing the repulsion of erythro...

Alleviation of Adverse Effects of Copper on Allium cepa L. by Exogenous Ascorbic Acid Application

Abstract In this study ameliorative effects of ascorbic acid (0.5 mM) on onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Red Azarshahr) under copper stress (Cu: 6.5 μM) were studied. Fresh weights of leaves and roots were reduced in seven week old plants under excess copper condition. Cu stress also reduced membrane stability index in leaves. There was a considerable increase in H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation i...

Measurement of sialic acid content is insufficient to assess bioactivity of recombinant human erythropoietin.

Assessment of biological potency and its comparison with clinical effects are important in the quality control of therapeutic glycoproteins. Animal models are usually used for evaluating bioactivity of these compounds. However, alternative methods are required to simplify the bioassay and avoid ethical issues associated with animal studies. Negatively charged sialic acid residues are known to b...

Presumable role of outer membrane proteins of Salmonella containing sialylated lipopolysaccharides serovar Ngozi, sv. Isaszeg and subspecies arizonae in determining susceptibility to human serum

BACKGROUND The O48 group comprises Salmonella bacteria containing sialic acid in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Bacteria with sialylated surface structures are described as pathogens that avoid immunological response of the host by making similar their surface antigens to the host's tissues (molecular mimicry). It is known that the smooth-type LPS of Salmonella enterica and outer membrane protei...

The Effect of Low Volume High Intensity Interval Training on Sarcolemmal Content of Fatty Acid Transport Proteins (FAT/CD36 and FABPpm) in Young Men

High-intensity interval training (HIT) induces skeletal muscle metabolic and performance adaptations that resemble traditional endurance training despite a low total exercise volume. On the other hand, fatty acid oxidation is increases in skeletal muscle with endurance training. This process is regulated in several sites, including the transport of fatty acids across the plasma membrane. The...
